RC Model Flying in North Devon

Slope Sites

Several of our members enjoy slope soaring on the many accessable sites within a 15 mile radius of Barnstaple.

The main sites used are :

Mortehoe : A coastal site with easy access which works well in a SW to WNW wind. Best to fly EPP models at this site due to restricted landing area. This site belongs to the National Trust and is found on the Southerley side of Mortehoe Cemetery.

Mortehoe

Woolacombe Downs : Another National Trust site . Works in a WSW to WNW wind. Park at top of Challacombe Hill and walk about 1/4 mile across to the Paragliding site. Launch off the footpath. Beware of Paragliders on a sunny day !! Good landing areas and usually safe to fly big glass ships off this slope.

Woolacombe Downs

Codden Hill : Park in one of the car parks on the South side of the hill and walk up to the monument. Works best in a NNW toNNE, but the South side will work if there is enough of a blow. Landing area is currently strewn with small rocks due to recent grading of the hill top. Best to fly EPP until the grass grows back properly ! There is also a small East facing bowl at the far end of the hill near the car park.

( Please note : Codden Hill is privately owned. Please keep to footpaths at all times.Follow the Countryside Code. Dogs MUST be on a lead. NO low flying over livestock. There is NO vehicular access to the top of the hill. )

Putsborough : Park up on the top road or pay to use the carpark. Fly off the North facing hill overlooking the caravan park , in the Winter. Move further along the hill in the Summer , to avoid overflying the caravans. Landing area not too bad , but wouldn't recommend flying big stuff from here. A walk further along the North side of the slope is worthwhile as there are several good sites to fly from ; landing areas get better the further along you go.

Baggy Point : There are several places around Baggy that are flyable in winds ranging from S right around to NNE. Involves a bit of a walk after parking in the NT car park in Croyde. Generally suitable only for EPP unless you are prepared to walk right out to the Western end of the Point , where there is a fairly large and reasonably even landing area.

Saunton Sands: The dunes can be flown for most of their length in a 12 - 15 mph Westerly.

Lift is quite confined - backing up only about 20 - 30 yds from the dune face and up to a height of about 60'. Lightly loaded models can be flown successfully within this narrow band of lift.

Park on Saunton Sands car park (£2 - £5 depending on height of season - free over the Winter) and walk along the beach.
